Visit castle w/o a tour?

My husband %26amp; I are staying in Munich a day %26amp; a half this month. We really want to see the castles but arrive on the first day at 1:30pm at the Main Station Munich. I%26#39;m not sure after reading the other posts that we%26#39;ll be able to make it to the ticket office to take a tour before they close. Is is possible to just walk around the outside of the castles? Or is the only way to view them by tour? Wasn%26#39;t sure of how they are situated %26amp; if we could still walk around the area even after the tours were closed.

Any tips would be appreciated!!

I%26#39;d just get to the hotel, checkin, dump the bags and spend the remainder of the afternoon in Munich.

By castles, I%26#39;m guessing you mean the one%26#39;s constructed by Ludwig. The closest one is at Chiemsee and I think it%26#39;d be pretty dark by the time you got there.

Chiemsee, Linderhof, Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau are all easily reached as daytrips from Munich, with an early start. To see the inside of the castles, a tour is required, but you can wander the grounds on your own.

You might try Schloss Nymphenburg, in Munich, as a better alternative on your first day. It is more of a palace than a castle, but it has very fine gardens.
