My wife and I will be visiting our son in Dortmund from December 13th through December 27th. We would like to visit some of the better Christmas markets, as well as any other attractions that might be good to see during the Christmas holidays. We have heard that the markets in Cologne, Rotenburg and Nuremburg are worth seeing. Also, do you have any recommendations as to where to stay while visiting these cities?
We visited Germany in June, 2007 so we are somewhat familiar with the train system there.
Any assistance that you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

Dortmund has an own chrismas market ,which is quite large.
Perfect day tours from Dortmund are the christmas markets of Düsseldorf , Essen , Cologne, Aachen and Münster .
It is also possible to do Essen + Düsseldorf and Cologne + Aachen together during one day.
It is cheap if you use local trains and the NRW-day ticket.
The Christmas market in Brussels / Belgium is told to be the best of Europe .
A good possibility to go there and to Nurenberg and Rothenburg are bus tours which start in Dortmund .
Book there :

http://www.anton-graf.de

The websites are in German , I hope your son can help , if not, go to a travel agency in Dortmund
