Travel

Hi,

I am due to be staying in the Centre Parcs village at Het Heijderbos village and would like to visit either Efteling amusement park or Warner Brothers Movie World.

Can I do this by using Trains or a bus

Also how easy would it be to visit a big city like Eindhoven Brugges or Amsterdam

Thanks.

Sorry, but I missed your contribution and just found it by fortune.

I suppose that you have already made your trip but if not I would suggest to post your question in any Netherland forum.

Warner Brothers Movie World is in Bottrop/Kirchhellen (Germany) but all the other mentioned cities and areas are in the Netherlands.

Maybe you could book a day trip by bus to de Efteling or Movie World, there are always many busses from everywhere.

French Restaurants: Dressler or Brasserie Desbrosses?

Hello,

I want to visit Berlin between 31st January and 3rd February and eat dinner in one of these French Restaurants. Which one would you recommend and why : Dressler (www.restaurant-dressler.de) or Brasserie Desbrosses (www.desbrosses.de)? Has anybody of the forum%26#39;s users been to these restaurants? I know that Dressler is more popular among tourists. Desbrosses is in the Ritz Carlton and is a bit more expensive than Dressler.

I have not been to Debrosses but I have to both Dresslers many times(20+) I like both but the food is a little better in the Ku%26#39;damm branch. They have a nice relaxed atmosphere, freindly staff and good fairly simple food, esp steaks or lamb

You probably have travelled by now, and I would love to read your experience, which you chose and what you thought.

My husband and I had lunch at Brasserie Desbrosses, and found the food quite satisfactory -- but not outstanding, and the service was excellent.

We were unhappily surprised, though, because we ordered a bottle of water (0.75 cl) for the table, and also three Cokes (in 0.2 cl bottle), and these drinks added 50 Euros to our bill!

B&B off the beaten track

I%26#39;m doing a tour through europe with my girlfriend. Next week we%26#39;re going to Berlin. During our trip we really enjoyed staying outside the crowdy city centers.

I heard the Berlin surroundings are quite beatiful. So it%26#39;s worth to try a B%26amp;b outside. But it should have a good connection to Berlin center. As we like to do some sightseeing, too.

Up to now I only found two nice-looking B%26amp;B:

http://www.hotel-benn.de/

and http://www.pension-am-see.com/bedbreakfast

(any experiences?)

Does somebody know other good place to stay of this kind?

thx

Definitely visit the Deutsche Museum. It is close to the city center (Marienplatz) and can be reached by tram or subway. Plan at least half a day there - - it got everything, such as trains, planes, ships, a coal mine. There%26#39;s a restaurant as well.

Shipping and storing luggage in Frankfurt

I%26#39;ve been living in Germany for two months so I have quite a bit of luggage. Before I go home I am traveling (RyanAir) for a week but it is not a round trip so I am trying to find a way to get my luggage to my final destination (Frankfurt main). I have found that DHL offers a very reasonably priced service to ship luggage within Germany but the problem I am running into is finding somewhere to ship it to. I wasn%26#39;t planning on getting a hotel my last night so I was hoping to ship to a luggage storage at the train station or the airport does anyone know if this is possible?

Thanks,

Well I found my way through this and I wanted to post in hopes that it can help someone else in the future.

You can ship straight to the Frankfurt Main luggage hold:

Fraport Security Service GmbH

Hugo-Eckener-Ring 6

Gepaeckaufbewahrung

60549 Frankfurt

If you plan to do this I would try to call the airport ahead of time just to double check everything. Hope this helps.

Visit castle w/o a tour?

My husband %26amp; I are staying in Munich a day %26amp; a half this month. We really want to see the castles but arrive on the first day at 1:30pm at the Main Station Munich. I%26#39;m not sure after reading the other posts that we%26#39;ll be able to make it to the ticket office to take a tour before they close. Is is possible to just walk around the outside of the castles? Or is the only way to view them by tour? Wasn%26#39;t sure of how they are situated %26amp; if we could still walk around the area even after the tours were closed.

Any tips would be appreciated!!

I%26#39;d just get to the hotel, checkin, dump the bags and spend the remainder of the afternoon in Munich.

By castles, I%26#39;m guessing you mean the one%26#39;s constructed by Ludwig. The closest one is at Chiemsee and I think it%26#39;d be pretty dark by the time you got there.

Chiemsee, Linderhof, Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau are all easily reached as daytrips from Munich, with an early start. To see the inside of the castles, a tour is required, but you can wander the grounds on your own.

You might try Schloss Nymphenburg, in Munich, as a better alternative on your first day. It is more of a palace than a castle, but it has very fine gardens.

Christmas Markets

My wife and I will be visiting our son in Dortmund from December 13th through December 27th. We would like to visit some of the better Christmas markets, as well as any other attractions that might be good to see during the Christmas holidays. We have heard that the markets in Cologne, Rotenburg and Nuremburg are worth seeing. Also, do you have any recommendations as to where to stay while visiting these cities?

We visited Germany in June, 2007 so we are somewhat familiar with the train system there.

Any assistance that you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

Dortmund has an own chrismas market ,which is quite large.

Perfect day tours from Dortmund are the christmas markets of Düsseldorf , Essen , Cologne, Aachen and Münster .

It is also possible to do Essen + Düsseldorf and Cologne + Aachen together during one day.

It is cheap if you use local trains and the NRW-day ticket.

The Christmas market in Brussels / Belgium is told to be the best of Europe .

A good possibility to go there and to Nurenberg and Rothenburg are bus tours which start in Dortmund .

Book there :

http://hafermann.de

http://www.anton-graf.de

http://www.trd-reisen.de

The websites are in German , I hope your son can help , if not, go to a travel agency in Dortmund

Is the train station area safe??

Hi,

We are planning a trip to Bremen in November, staying at the Best Western Zur Post (which is just opposite the train station).

I know sometimes the areas areound the train stations can be pretty dodgy. Is that the case in Bremen? I would really rather not have to encounter a mass of drugged up/drunken people on the way back to the hotel after dinner (not my idea of a perfect ending to a nice day out!!)

Any advice on areas to avoid and/or areas or hotels that are nice (haven%26#39;t booked anything yet, so am still flexible).

Thanks for any help! :o)

In my view the train station in Bremen can seem a bit rough at night but only during the Freimarkt (beer festival, finishes 2nd Nov). Any where else and at any other time you couldn%26#39;t get mugged even if you tried. Obviously normal caution applies, like anywhere else in this world.

Switzerland trip- add on Lucerne of Bavaria

Hello,

I need your help with my travel itinerary. I have reservations in Grindelwald from Dec. 22-26th and I am really looking forward to spending Christmas there!

However, I can%26#39;t decide if I should use my extra 3-4 days of vacation travelling to Lucerne or to Bavaria(Rothenburg/Neauchweinstein castle). I have been advised that it would be really hard to travel to those places from Grindelwald and see them in three days. I am just not sure if Lucerne could give me the same cozy Christmas village feeling.

Does anyone have any advice to give on the matter? Thanks so much.

Shopping Berlin and Hotel information

Hi from me as well!

I wonder if there are shopping bargains in Berlin. I am particularly interested in sportswear and ski equpment. Has anyone of you ever bought something of the kind? Is it worth looking for bargains and carrying such stuff or should I abandon the whole idea?

Another thing i would like to ask is whether anyone has stayed in Radisson Sas Berlin. If yes, were you satisfied? Could you give me some information about the area? Is it lively? Are there shops, restaurants, bars at night? is the transportation convenient? Are there direct links from/to Schoenefeld airport? Thanks in advance.I am waiting for your answer.

Traditional german 'pub' or beer hall to go for a drink in.

I%26#39;m in Berlin in a few weeks time just for a couple of nights. In the evening I like to go for a few drinks. Can you suggest somewhere traditional where I could go. It would be nice if there was a bit of traditional music or failing this at least somwheer where you can sit and talk. I%26#39;m stopping near Frankfurter Alle (nearest tube is Samaritterstrasse) so somewhere near that would be ideal but if there is nothing near there, then somewhere that is quite easy to access as we are relying on public transport. Thanks

Arcotel Velvet

After much searching, I have booked the Arcotel Velvet for my trip to Berlin on Tuesday 30 September.

I am flying into Schonefeld airport, and am a little confused on the best way to get to the hotel.

The hotel website gives directions from Tegel Airport only.

Please forgive me if this question has been asked a million times, but I am arriving after 8 p.m. and don%26#39;t want to be wandering the streets on my first night looking for the hotel.

Would I be better advised to get a taxi direct to the hotel?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

You could make the trip by public transportation in 40 - 60 mins with one or two changes.

http://www.bvg.de/index.php/en/Bvg/Start

But if you%26#39;re not familiar with Berlin and/or don%26#39;t speak German, it could be somewhat daunting. The trip can be made using various combinations of bus, train, S-Bahn and U-Bahn, depending on when you leave. Btw, just navigating the Journey Planner is a bit complicated, but if you want to try it, enter the airport and your hotel%26#39;s address and then choose the terminal and street with 10117 Mitte from the dropdown menus. It says the Oranienburger Tor U-Bahn station is 50 meters from the hotel.

A taxi would be the easiest albeit considerably more expensive option.

When you do go, you might want to consider another hotel. Nothing against the Arcotel (about which I know nothing) but it looks pretty far from the action. You%26#39;ll find a lot of recommendations on here for places and areas to stay.

All the best.

It was highly recommended on TA as well.

Re: Welcome Cards At Airport

Hi, yes you can get these at the airport - there are plenty of machines in the walkway before you go up to the platform. Most only take cash so have plenty of euros (my pass for 72 hours ABC cost about 25euros - that was last week!) - make sure you select the option for Tourist passes (it took me ages to find this on the machine!) - and stamp the pass on the platform before you travel as it is invalid without doing so (these are at the top of the stairs). Note that the guide you get free with this pass you can get from any train information centre on showing your card (we did this in Berlin at Zoologischer). Finally, check if you pass is valid on the AirportExpress train - I dont think it is and we used this to travel and luckily our tickets were not checked, but I suggest you double check if you decide to use this mode of transport. If you cant then the S-bahn is just as good to use and almost as quick. Hope this helps!

The Welcome Card (must be for zones ABC!) is valid on the Airport Express.

Shopping

Visit the Viktualienmarkt for a display of fruit, vegetables - check out the potato stall for a vast array - and buy herbs and spices, so much better and varied than here.

Window shop in the Maximilianstrasse - no prices but divine window displays.

Check out the number of jewellers and just drool.

Wonderful Christmas window displays and decorations - see what we%26#39;ll be buying some time ahead.

Fantastic food and not all sausages and cabbage (wurst und sauerkraut).

So much too see and do!

Hope it is not too late. It looks like Tarm has it%26#39;s own railway station. Travel time from Hamburg is about 6 hours, there are several connections though, some are much slower.

Check out www.bahn.de (in german and other languages).

dresden lace figurines

hello. my husband and i would like to purchase dresden lace figurines directly from a factory that manufactures them. after going to many different websites, i have still failed to locate exactly where to go or who to contact.i do know that there are several different factories. there is one in particular that is highly sought after named giselle.....

can anyone tell us which airport we should fly into? and where we should stay to go on a dresden search while in germany? we are looking to purchase wholesale for resale in the usa. thanks for any help.

Weeze Airport to Nijmegen Transport

Hi,

We are 3 guys arriving at Weeze airport and we need to get to Nijmegen. I have seen on previous forums that there are shuttle buses that run at approx 15 Euro per person but are there plenty of taxis around so we can just turn up and get in the first taxi we see? How much can we expect to pay for the trip to central Nijmegen?
